DANGDA TRAIL

The starting point of the Dandalin Road is located in Xinyi Township, Nantou. Which starts from Zhuoshui River and leads all the way east to Qicai Lake in Wanrong Township, Hualien County. A total distance of over 100 kilometers, the trail was opened up by logging and east-west power transmission projects, which leads to a development trace that’s hard for nature to cover. This forested route has once been lockdown due to the imminent issue of natural environment maintenance. With the lifting of prohibition, people could once again unveil this mysterious trail.

To Conquer Dangda in a day, We start the journey before sunrise.
THE RACE IS ON, AGAINST TIME!

TO CONQUER DANGDA IN A DAY, WE START THE JOURNEY BEFORE SUNRISE. THE RACE IS ON! AGAINST TIME!

110 Kilometers,
3,700 Meters Climb

With a total mileage of 110 kilometers plus a total climb over 3,700 meters, the number probably wouldn't seem terrifying to those who have the experience of riding on Taiwan's mountain roads. These number is probably just like taking the KOM challenge. However, if you actually take the challenge by yourself, you’ll experience the feeling of riding through the thorns.

In the first 20 kilometers, half the climb was already achieved. Riding on the loose roads, "fresh" rocks can be seen falling off from the cliff, frequently. This makes around 15~20% of the climb an even more difficult ride,This increases the possibility of making the rear wheel slip, but also the mental strength to stay focus in a bid to avoid the scratch of the shale, which will damage the tires. Even with a 12-speed big cassette, this section of the road still feels like a single-speed car with the lightest gear ratio. At this point, you will finally understand what the derailleur companies are fighting for between the 52T and 51T.

MOUNTAIN MONUMENT

This monument commemorates the difficult task in constructing power transmission across the East and West of the early years.

We took a quick break from the torture of the continuous climbs, however, the ups and downs of the circuitous routes didn’t make the whole journey easier. The altitude came to be more than two thousand at this point, holding two seconds of breaths to take a sip of water will easily increase your pulse, not to even mention the climbs! When you see the wheel track is of the same height as the electric tower, it means you have reached the apex!

It took nearly seven hours to reach the peak, however, this isn’t the end of the journey. It’s still a long way for us to return back to the starting point. The returning ride seems a lot easier since there’s no longer a difficult continuous climb. However, the riders still have to conquer the continuous downhill for the last 20 kilometers. The technique of the riders and the performance of their bikes become the most crucial things for them to pass this challenge. Assisting from the S-Works Epic's omnipotent performance, we successfully completed this memorable journey before sunset!
